15 Travel Movies to Inspire Your Wanderlust

Although these movies are in no particular order, these are some of my favorite movies that have inspired me to want to travel to different destinations, exotic places and have triggered my itchy feet! From inspirational movies that motivate you to get up and moving and stay positive to country specific adventures or films spanning multiple destinations. You will notice that I personally love movies with Strong, female role models. Well, here they are:

I absolutely love Jim Carrey and the fact that he stars in this movie only adds to my pure joy! Motivational and hilarious, Yes Man will make you want to get up and say YES to the world!

Anna & the King

I LOVE this movie! A period film about the country of Siam in Asia. You will follow one strong woman's journey to this country and the challenges she faced acting as a school teacher for the King's royal children. This drama will enrapture you and make you talking to your tv screen (ok, maybe that's just me!)

Eat Pray Love

I admit it. I've seen this movie over a hundred times! A truly emotional journey for womankind as they follow one woman for a year in Italy, India and Indonesia as she searches to find her connection with her spirituality. A great story with the great actress, Julia Roberts! What more could you want?!

Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights

Not only have I been obsessed with Cuba since I was a child growing up in California, but I've also always had a secret wish to learn to dance the Salsa! Anyone interested in either will fall for this movie and watch it over, and over and over and over and over... like me!

Africa United

I stumbled across this movie while traveling through Timor-Leste of all places. I've always had an obsession with Africa and this movie is truly an interesting look at Africa as a group of rag-tag kids travel across many countries to chase their dream of playing Soccer! A cute, funny and heart-touching film.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

A man, Ben Stiller (Love him!), who always day-dreams instead of lives his life takes a twist of fate as he pursues a photographer around the world to off-the-beaten places such as Greenland and Afghanistan! A spectacular movie and by far one of my all time favorites! Very touching and motivational with a message for everyone!

Under the Tuscan Sun

Another movie with a strong woman role model. She takes a trip to Italy only to spontaneously buy a "fixer-upper" in Tuscany! Follow her emotional journey as she recovers from her divorce and finds herself getting the life she always wanted!

Slumdog Millionaire

This movie is not really about anyone traveling to India. It's about India and many of the hardships a slumdog kid growing up in this harsh world must face. I love this movie for its story, its reality and its in-your-face look at poverty, cruelty of the system and corrupt police and officials taking advantage of the system. Oh...and there's a happy ending with a Bollywood dance of course!

Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants

I like the Sisterhood Series of Movies for the fact that as a solo traveler myself, I always dreamed of being able to have a close group of girlfriends to travel the world with and stay connected to! This movie sparks some interesting stories as the girls travel the summer to different destinations and yet find a way to stay connected with one another through a pair of travelling pants.

Lost in Translation

This movie is for those of us who are expats living alone in a culture and world far from home and the feelings of loneliness and "lost-ness" we can sometimes feel. Follow two strangers as they meet in Tokyo and bond during their utter "lost-ness" in a crazy, strange world.

Leap Year

This is a fun romantic comedy about one woman's solo trip to Ireland to take matters into her own hands and propose to her man. She ends up having an amazing adventure in the Irish country side and I can't help but wish for an adventure in Ireland similar to hers!

The Gods Must Be Crazy

I mentioned already my obsession with Africa, well these movies from the 1980's was a big part of my childhood! Hilarious, heart-felt and truly entertaining movies about Africa and a few crazy expats living there. I've seen these movies a million times and can't help but say every-time when I talk about movies today, "they just don't make 'em like they used to!"

Seven Years in Tibet

A drama, based on a true story about the Dalai Llama and Tibet, AND it's starring Brad Pitt! Umm, yes please! This movie is very informative and a really fascinating story about a man running away from a War sneaks his way into a city that had never-before been seen by foreigners, only to become the Dalai Llama's personal teacher during a crazy time. Truly an interesting story for those like me fascinated with history and Tibet! ​​​​​​​

The Bucket List

I'm not going to lie, this one is going to have you grabbing for the tissues! I love this movie because not only does it feature two incredible actors, but makes you realize just how short life is and that its never too late to cross off those Bucket List items!

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

I had a love/hate relationship with India during my two years living there as an expat, but I still can't deny my fascination with this exotic country! It still has a hold of my heart and these movies capture that love affair best! Watch a group of seniors move to India to live--and boy do they live!--as an alternative to retirement homes in England!
