Christian dashed along the empty corridor, his hand clutching mine tightly as he dragged me behind him. My heels clattered across the smooth dance floor as I held tightly onto the skirt of my long, flowy ball gown. The room had been filled with a crowd of people and live music only moments ago, though you wouldn’t know it now. It seemed as if the maze of different dance floors and rooms had somehow aided in our desertion. It was as if we were the only two people in the world… mostly because we were the only two people left in the room.

A loud bang erupted down the hall. The sounds of the countdown to New Year’s, party poppers and applause echoed from the main ballroom. Christian hesitated, knowing that it was officially the New Year. He spun on his heels to face me before scooping me into his arms and planting me with a celebratory kiss. I smiled in the midst, knowing that my Vengeful Red Lipstick would mark this handsome man in his dashing tuxedo as mine.

I couldn’t believe just several months earlier I had been single, driving solo across the desert in Turkmenistan with nothing but the horizon to my name. I was a free-spirit. A rogue. A nomad. I had been penniless, jobless and boyfriend-less then. And suddenly it dawned on me. Here I was, three months later and suddenly I had it all.

I had heard about the New Years Ball at the Hofburg long ago during my travels. I always dreamed of attending a ball and of all the many things I was willing to do SOLO, going to a fancy ball was not among them. I had made a promise with myself in my travels that someday, when I found the right guy, I would chase some of my Bucket List items with him at my heels.

When Christian Captured Me in Belgium and I went to Germany with him, it didn’t take him long before we were an official couple. And shortly after, while planning out our big move to England, I mentioned my devious dream of attending a ball. I was surprised how easily he agreed to go to the Hofburg Ball with me. In fact, his years of ballroom dance class vastly outshone my own two left feet and soon I realized that he was just as eager to celebrate our upcoming New Years together. Shopping for a ballroom gown was a great joy for me. I never fantasized myself as having a big, expensive wedding so to me this was the closest I was going to get. I went to small villages in Germany at the recommendations of his sister and I narrowed down the search to my two favorite dresses. I brought Christian to see the winners and together we selected one, also picking up a tuxedo for him!

On the day before the ball, we drove from Germany and had a short pit-stop in Prague before arriving in our hotel in Vienna. The next day he and I explored the city arm-in-arm and I went to my appointment to get my hair and make-up professionally done. (You only live once, I figured.) I smiled as I viewed my Vengeful Red Lipstick reflected back to me in the mirror. We left the studio and dawned our evening wear before heading out to the ball.

Making a wish on the tree for the new years | Krys Kolumbus Travel It was a magical night of dancing and fun and it was by far one of the best ways to celebrate the New Year and our new beginnings. Although the tickets were not cheap, nor was my dress and his tuxedo, it was well worth the enchanting memories that brings smiles to our faces.

Tips: If your going to go, I suggest taking a vehicle or carriage to the ball. We stayed until 4am and had no trouble getting a private car to take us back to the hotel. Also, as Christian and I learned, they DO NOT announce when its nearly time for New Years in the other dance rooms! Be sure to keep track of time and head to the main ballroom BEFORE the countdown!

Ladies: If you are going to wear heels all night, maybe practice first! Also, just the right amount of champagne keeps your feet from killing you.

If you want to go Solo: Of course it’s possible to go stag! I personally wanted to go with a date because I have done so many grand things in life solo that I felt I wanted to share the event with someone special. If you plan to go on your own or with your mom or gal pals, there are plenty of people attending from all walks of life. Your bound to meet someone or enjoy the evening, regardless!

Picking up your tickets: It was a right pain in the ass to pick out tickets up from the office that morning as the line was horrendous and the women at the counter closed without actually telling anyone in line. Other than that, everything was pretty straight forward. The Hofburg is a HUGE palace so I do recommend checking it out prior to the event so you know exactly where you’re going.

Other sight-seeing suggestions: We spent a couple of days in Vienna and one of the other things we did was do the Lipizzaner tour and watched the famous Lipizzaner Airs. It is a special breed of horse that performs special movements inside a gorgeous arena in the palace and it was a lot of fun to watch. This show is typically booked well in advanced so be sure to reserve your seat! Spanish Riding School Tickets
